An extreme Israeli politician within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition advocated for a contentious approach toward Gaza. The comments made by Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir surfaced following an appearance on a podcast hosted by former Gaza-held hostage, Rom Braslavski.
Ben-Gvir, during the discussion, criticized Israel’s reduced military activity in Gaza after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. He openly disagreed with the Prime Minister’s stance, suggesting nightly targeted actions in the region, remarking, “There are people there who are not worthy of life.”
Previous similar remarks by Ben-Gvir and other officials faced strong global condemnation, with some presented to the United Nations as potentially genocidal. The Israeli government, however, rejects claims of genocide in Gaza.
The comments have drawn limited attention in Israeli domestic media, reflecting a shift where once-fringe ideologies, like Ben-Gvir’s, are gaining popularity.
Since the violent attacks by Hamas militants in 2023, where 1,200 were killed and 251 taken hostage, figures like Ben-Gvir have gained prominence. Hostages have reported experiencing severe starvation and abuse during captivity.
Ben-Gvir’s Role in Israeli Security
Despite overseeing the police and prison systems, Ben-Gvir cannot command military strikes on Gaza. Yet, his influence over Israel’s security framework is considerable. He has publicly claimed responsibility for reducing food rations for Palestinian prisoners, leading to Israel’s top court’s 2025 ruling against his department for not providing an adequate diet.
Military Operations in Gaza
Israel historically launched daily attacks on Gaza, resulting in over 1,250 casualties since the October truce, as per Gaza’s Health Ministry. The military, claiming to focus on Hamas militants, paused these operations due to diplomatic decisions related to U.S. interests and criticism from right-wing politicians like Ben-Gvir.
Proposals on Palestinian Emigration
In the same interview, Ben-Gvir suggested mass emigration of Palestinians, a proposal that some international lawyers argue could be ethnic cleansing. In 2005, Israel vacated the Gaza Strip, dismantling Jewish settlements in the area.
His propositions align with sentiments against Hamas’ longstanding demands for a Palestinian state. Current Israeli policies resist withdrawing from Gaza while maintaining that Hamas must disarm before any further agreements or reconstructions occur.
