McConnell’s Health and Political Engagement Update

Conservative commentator Scott Jennings shared insights about Senator Mitch McConnell’s health on CNN. Jennings reported that McConnell is in an ‘improving position’ as questions persist about his health and prolonged absence. This follows McConnell’s public disappearance after a hospitalization on June 14, which led to a stay at an inpatient rehabilitation facility. Although his office announced his discharge last week, McConnell has not publicly addressed the public, leading to concerns about his condition.

Jennings, speaking on CNN’s The Arena, explained that McConnell personally called him, appearing engaged and focused on political issues. The senator, aged 84, discussed topics including the Michigan Senate race, Republican electoral strategies, the farm bill, and the Senate filibuster. Jennings noted, ‘He called me directly from his phone today,’ adding that McConnell sounded better than an earlier conversation post-hospitalization.

McConnell’s plan is to return to the Senate on September 14. Jennings remarked, ‘I think their plan is to hopefully get him back to the Senate,’ acknowledging the importance of legislative matters to the senator before his term ends in January. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat, has questioned McConnell’s silence, arguing that constituents deserve a direct update. Beshear has not personally heard from McConnell, suggesting the lack of communication raises concerns about his capability to serve.

Jennings countered the criticism, describing McConnell as a private person, reluctant to discuss health matters publicly. McConnell, a polio survivor, is aware of speculation about his condition and expressed frustration over public scrutiny.

Though McConnell hasn’t voted in the Senate since June, Jennings noted his active engagement behind the scenes. McConnell has conducted meetings with staff, connected with senators by phone, and followed legislative developments. Earlier this year, McConnell announced he would not seek reelection, serving the final months of a long Senate career as Kentucky prepares for a successor.

Jennings’s conversation with McConnell revealed his ongoing involvement in politics and legislative issues during recovery. McConnell was ‘really up on the campaigns,’ discussing Senate battlegrounds and Republican prospects. Jennings said, ‘We talked a lot about the Michigan Senate race. We talked about Maine a little bit,’ highlighting McConnell’s focus on national politics.

Beyond campaign strategy, McConnell discussed prioritizing policy issues such as the farm bill and National Defense Authorization Act. Jennings described these priorities as crucial to McConnell during his recovery. Jennings also noted McConnell’s awareness of the scrutiny surrounding his absence. McConnell acknowledged the situation as ‘unusual,’ stating, ‘I’m sitting here, the doctors tell me I don’t have any life-threatening issues. It must seem rather strange.’
