Nick Reiner Faces Murder Indictment with ‘Lying in Wait’ Allegation

Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, has been formally indicted on two counts of murder. The charges are linked to the December 2025 stabbing deaths of his parents at their home in Brentwood, California.

Prosecutors revealed Wednesday that a Los Angeles County grand jury has returned an indictment with new ‘special circumstance’ allegations. The indictment accuses Nick Reiner, 32, of committing two murders ‘by means of lying in wait,’ which is a special circumstance under California law. Additionally, it includes a multiple-murder special circumstance allegation and states that Reiner personally used a knife during the alleged crimes.

These special-circumstance allegations serve as enhancements capable of increasing the defendant’s potential punishment if found guilty. The Los Angeles Public Defenders Office, in communication with Newsweek, stated they had no further comments on the ongoing case.

Prosecutors assert that the case involves both multiple murders and lying in wait, suggesting the attacks were carried out with concealment or by surprise. According to Los Angeles County officials, the lying-in-wait allegation means Reiner now contends with two special-circumstance claims. If convicted as charged, he faces life in prison without parole or the death penalty, though prosecutors have not finalized their decision on pursuing capital punishment.

District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman commented on the indictment, stating that it involved a ‘profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing.’
