Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Challenging ‘Star Trek’ Experience

Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s challenging role as an alien on “Star Trek: Enterprise” almost led him to walk away from acting entirely. Before gaining fame on “Supernatural” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” Morgan played the Xindi alien Damron, an experience that tested his limits.

Morgan shared his difficult experience on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. He said the extensive prosthetics caused him significant distress and triggered claustrophobia. “I hated it so much,” Morgan admitted, recalling the urge to abandon acting altogether.

He often endured up to 14 hours a day in rigid prosthetics, making it hard to eat and breathe comfortably. “It was an experience I want to forget,” he revealed, acknowledging that he still wakes up troubled by memories of it.

This challenging period came at a difficult time in Morgan’s career journey. By his mid-30s, he had been moving from one guest role to another, with only a few smaller film appearances to his name. To make ends meet, he worked various side jobs like building fences and other manual labor.

At one point, he faced the possibility of leaving the entertainment industry entirely. “I was done,” he recounted, but uncertainty about his future career path left him conflicted.

Morgan described how he lacked formal education or a clear plan for a different career. Additionally, he was told he had aged out of potential Hollywood roles, a sentiment echoed by his manager, who dropped him for the same reason.

However, Morgan’s persistence eventually paid off. Around the age of 38, his breakthrough came with roles on “Supernatural,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Weeds.” These opportunities turned his career around, leading to lasting success in the industry.

Today, Jeffrey Dean Morgan remains a prominent figure in television. He stars as Negan in AMC’s “The Walking Dead: Dead City,” which began its third season on July 26. Besides acting, Morgan serves as an executive producer on the series.
