An abandoned sailboat off the coast of Owen Beach, Washington, became an unexpected refuge for 60 cats and kittens. The Tacoma Police Department began a rescue operation on August 6 after reports emerged of a deserted 40-foot vessel in nearby waters.
Initial Findings and Rescue Effort
Officers from the Marine Services Unit initially found over 30 cats in unsafe and unhealthy conditions aboard the sailboat. Many of the animals appeared frightened and malnourished. Collaborating with Animal Control and the Forensics Unit, the team worked to ensure the safe removal of the cats.
As the rescue continued over six days, officers discovered the number of feline inhabitants had grown to 60.
Police and Animal Control Involvement
“That’s a wrap! The final cat is off the boat. Fur real this time!” police remarked after the last cat was rescued. “Final cat count: 60!”
Animal Control verified that all identified cats had been evacuated. Officers humorously concluded online, saying, “That’s all for meow!” Nonetheless, they planned further checks throughout the week as a safeguard.
Police emphasized, “Cats are exceptionally good at hiding. We continue our efforts to ensure no cat remains onboard.” An ongoing search was mandated by a search warrant to cover any possibilities.
Public Involvement and Safety Warning
Marine Services began proceedings to relocate the registered sailboat. Authorities urged the public at Owen Beach to report sightings of any remaining cats to Animal Control. They cautioned against unauthorized rescue attempts.
“We appreciate the care shown by animal lovers, but this is an active criminal case. Our priority is both animal safety and the integrity of the investigation,” police advised.
A warning specified not to board the vessel unless legally authorized. This followed an incident where a rescue volunteer, Camille Sutherland, boarded the sailboat unauthorized to capture cats. Such actions complicated the ongoing investigation regarding the boat owner.
Outcomes for Rescued Cats
With no arrests or charges reported, over 40 rescued cats found refuge at the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County. The remaining animals were placed in local foster care.
