Bregman’s Mechanics Lead Cubs to Victory

Alex Bregman has been focusing on refining his swing, spending late nights analyzing video footage in his hotel room. He worked closely with Chicago Cubs assistant director of major-league development, Ben Martin. Utilizing KinaTrax data, Martin illustrated how Bregman’s biometrics, especially during his swing load, compare to his mechanics in 2016 at Double-A Corpus Christi.

Bregman observed distinct differences in his mechanics during these studies. “In the morning, I found myself thinking about the technical adjustments. I hit the cage with those insights in mind,” Bregman noted. The reorganization of Bregman’s shoulder and hip alignment seemed beneficial, given his performance against the Washington Nationals.

Bregman hit a home run Tuesday before outdoing himself on Wednesday. In the Cubs’ 12-6 victory over the Nationals, Bregman achieved three home runs and totaled a career-high of seven RBIs, closing the Cubs within three games of the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers.

“In recent weeks, I’ve been progressing, but the changes in the last two days have made a notable difference,” Bregman stated. “Earlier performances weren’t as consistent, but now my mechanics feel right.”

The Cubs are only the third team since RBIs became an official stat in 1920 to have two players achieve three-home-run, seven-RBI games in the same season. This adds Bregman and Dansby Swanson to the list alongside names such as the Yankees’ Aaron Judge and Jasson Domínguez in 2025.

Manager Craig Counsell emphasizes the demands of the 162-game season, noting Bregman’s dedication. “It’s a credit to his relentless work and pursuit of being the best version of himself,” Counsell remarked.

The Cubs, now at 71-50, lead the major league with 17 games scoring 10 or more runs. Their format includes averaging 7.1 runs over their last nine games, with eight wins. Left-hander David Peterson allowed the offensive lineup to flourish with four runs (three earned) in five innings against the Nationals.

Wednesday’s game highlighted the Cubs’ efficiency in scoring with two outs. Their four runs pushed their lead to 241 two-out runs this season. August alone saw 36 of their 70 runs with two outs contribute to their impressive standing in on-base and batting averages in these situations.

Swanson, who contributed with a double and a home run, emphasized the preparation and collaborative spirit of the team. “A lot of guys are prepared, focusing on at-bats with the team in mind,” Swanson explained.

The Cubs pressure left-handed pitchers. Facing lefty Jackson Kent making his major-league debut for the Nationals, they drew five walks in four-plus innings. This performance added to their already leading stats against left-handed pitching.

Counsell commented on the team’s consistent approach, highlighting key players Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch. “They’ve been exceptional against left-handed pitching. Pete isn’t just an asset at the top of the lineup, but one of the better hitters overall,” Counsell said.
