Russia Releases American Veteran Robert Gilman After Years of Detention

Robert Gilman, a veteran from Massachusetts and former Marine, has returned to the United States after being released by Russia. Gilman, who spent four years in Russian custody, was freed following discussions between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump described the release as a ‘humanitarian gesture’ and noted that no exchanges were made for Gilman’s freedom.

Concerns about arrests of Americans in Russia have increased, with fears they are being used as leverage in negotiations involving convicted Russians abroad. Currently, five other Americans remain imprisoned in Russia, with their health reportedly declining, as per Global Reach, an organization advocating for their release.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared an image on social media showing Gilman, weakened yet draped in an American flag, reuniting with his family. Rubio emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to secure the release of other detained Americans.

Gilman is expected to arrive at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland and then head to a military hospital in Texas for medical and psychological evaluation. Trump mentioned a conversation with Gilman, who requested a cheeseburger upon landing, to which Trump cheerfully agreed.

Gilman was initially arrested in 2022 under allegations of attacking a police officer following an incident on a train. He faced a series of accusations, including assaulting a prison inspector, investigator, and guard. His imprisonment duration was extended multiple times, culminating in a ten-year sentence by December 2024. Despite reportedly pleading guilty, Gilman’s father and the U.S. State Department have criticized the charges as unjust and politically motivated.

Lexie Hudson, Gilman’s sister, publicly praised Trump and U.S. Senator Ed Markey for their roles in securing Gilman’s release. Hudson expressed gratitude while condemning the harsh treatment her brother received as an American Marine in Russian custody.

Russian authorities remain silent on Gilman’s release specifics, and the Federal Penitentiary Service has not commented on the reported decline in his health during detention.

Gilman’s lawyer, Irina Brazhnikova, reported that Gilman had been hospitalized in a psychiatric ward due to severe mental and physical health issues. Reports indicated his condition was ‘dire and life-threatening,’ necessitating diplomatic intervention for his release. Gilman had suffered considerably, including prolonged periods in a ‘dissociative stupor,’ due to alleged abuse during his imprisonment.

Senator Markey criticized the delayed response to Gilman’s deteriorating condition and urged for continued diplomatic efforts to free other detained Americans. He condemned the treatment Gilman received, attributing his severe health decline to the conditions imposed by Russian authorities during his detention.
