Georgia Teacher’s Heroic Act: Saving a Life at Myrtle Beach

A tragedy unfolded on the sands of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, as a cherished Georgia elementary school teacher and father risked his life to save a young girl from a rip current, losing his own in the process.

Derrick Moore, aged 47, responded to the alarming situation on Friday evening near 10th Avenue South. The Myrtle Beach Police Department reported that a young girl was ensnared by a rip current around 7:53 p.m. Moore bravely entered the ocean to rescue her.

Successfully bringing the girl to safety, Moore was later submerged by the same current, his fate unknown until police revealed on Saturday that his body had washed ashore.

In a poignant remark to WRAL, Moore’s daughter spoke of her father’s sacrifice, expressing heartbreak over their loss. “We loved him and are truly heartbroken that he’s gone,” she stated. Moore’s commitment was evident as he acted without knowing the child he saved.

Beyond his profession, Moore excelled in athletics, links tracing back to his college days. An alumnus of Samford University, he graduated in 2001, competing in football and track and field.
