New Jersey Voter Fraud Triggers Call for SAVE Act

Congressman Chip Roy is advocating for the Save America Act to enhance federal election security. A software error in New Jersey allowed 6,600 non-citizens to register to vote, with hundreds participating in voting. Roy argues for the necessity of voter ID, supported by 80% of Americans, pressing the Senate to enact the legislation.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill would endorse a voter ID law in the state, although she opposes President Donald Trump’s federal SAVE Act, labeling it as “voter suppression.” A spokesperson confirmed Sherrill’s support for current ID requirements for voter registration and openness to strengthening election processes.

Sherrill’s stance offers New Jersey Republicans a chance to challenge Democrats on voter ID, despite her opposition to the broader SAVE America Act. Her office reiterated that she supported a voter ID law when discussing with local media in July, clarifying she has no objections to voter ID.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer remarked that Democrats favor voter ID; however, they voted against a GOP proposal. Sherrill criticized the SAVE Act, calling it “voter suppression” and a way to gather personal data of New Jersey residents.

Sherrill, after years in the House, voted against the SAVE Act, considering it an “extreme voter suppression bill.” She faced backlash when a Motor Vehicle Commission error registered about 6,600 non-citizens. Of those, under 400 voted, leading the state to remove over 4,500 registrations as further reviews continue.

New Jersey Assembly Minority Leader John DiMaio sees Sherrill’s recent comments as a shift after Republicans’ long-standing advocacy for voter ID. DiMaio emphasized the problem lies with Democratic leaders controlling legislative progress, hindering voter ID advancements.

The Motor Vehicle System error revealed vulnerabilities in New Jersey’s election process, with no clear response on the cause. Voter-ID laws often create state-level partisan conflicts, with Democrats arguing some make voting difficult for eligible individuals.

One notable dispute occurred in Georgia in 2021, where a law added ID requirements for absentee voting. Backlash included moving the MLB’s All-Star Game from Atlanta and threatening Hollywood boycotts.

In her role, Sherrill supported the John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act to improve voting access and expand early voting, opposing MAGA Republicans’ actions and Trump’s demands for voter information.

President Trump underscores the presence of noncitizens on voter rolls, advocating for the SAVE America Act. The act mandates proof of U.S. citizenship for federal election registration and photo ID to vote in these elections.
