Rising Vibrio Vulnificus Infections Prompt Warnings in Louisiana

2 hours ago 0

Louisiana has issued a warning to beachgoers regarding Vibrio vulnificus, a flesh-eating bacterium, due to a significant increase in infections. This bacterium exists naturally in warm seawater.

This year alone, nine individuals have contracted the infection, and unfortunately, five have died. State health officials provided these figures, which surpass the annual average of seven infections and one death recorded over the last decade.

The upward trend in infections aligns with observations of warming waters, which have extended the range of Vibrio vulnificus cases further north.
