A young man in Florida, aged 21, has been charged with the murder of his mother in a tragic series of events. Gibson Nash faced first-degree murder charges after law enforcement found his mother, Margaret Chu Dufour, deceased in her home.
Deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office discovered Dufour, a 56-year-old nurse, lying on the floor of her residence. This was not their first visit to the house. Approximately a month prior, deputies addressed a ‘disturbance’ related to Dufour’s moving company.
“Movers attempted to charge her more,” stated Sheriff Grady Judd during a news conference on August 5. “Deputies assisted her without any fuss.”
On July 21, a disturbing sequence of events unfolded. Before 7 a.m., Nash was involved in several traffic collisions while driving his mother’s blue BMW SUV. This involved fleeing the scene of an initial crash and causing further accidents, leading to property damage and hospitalizations for three individuals.
Authorities found Nash unconscious in the SUV, covered in blood. The crash didn’t seem severe enough to account for his condition, prompting confusion among deputies.
“He’s covered in blood, but the crash doesn’t explain why,” said Judd.
Nash, unidentified at first, was transported to a hospital. Meanwhile, deputies returned to Dufour’s home, finding unexplained circumstances. A broken glass plate and a shovel near the house triggered suspicion, prompting entry with a spare key found nearby.
Inside, deputies discovered Dufour’s body demonstrating brutality. She suffered from blunt force injuries and strangulation, declared the medical examiner.
“One of the most violent murders I’ve seen in my career,” Sheriff Judd remarked.
In earlier incidents in Tennessee, Nash had been arrested twice for allegedly threatening his mother’s life. Once, he had attacked her over not being allowed to use an Xbox, showing a pattern of violence.
After a court intervention, Dufour moved to Florida for her son’s mental health support. Despite his bipolar and schizophrenic tendencies, she returned to Tennessee to release Nash on bond.
Post-crashes, evidence tied Nash to the crime. Blood tests confirmed his mother’s presence on his clothes, and physical injuries on Nash indicated assault on Dufour.
Nash faced additional charges related to leaving accident scenes with injuries. Nash’s lawyer, arranged by his father, has limited law enforcement interviews.
“Nash’s actions show a disregard for others,” commented Judd.
Detained without bond, Gibson Nash presents a persistent threat to society, stressed local authorities.
