Officials confirmed the tragic deaths of two helicopter pilots who crashed while combating a wildfire in Utah on Saturday. The incident occurred when their Sikorsky Skycrane helicopter went down on Friday morning, according to the Sevier County Sheriff.
The helicopter was part of the firefighting efforts addressing the blaze in the Fishlake National Forest. Tragically, the crash sparked a new fire, which merged with the existing one, resulting in a total of nearly 174 square miles (about 451 square kilometers) scorched. The pilots, employed by Helicopter Transport Services under a U.S. Forest Service contract, have not been publicly identified.
Initially, officials were unable to reach the crash site due to fire conditions. However, crews accessed the area on Saturday, confirming the deaths with the help of the Sevier County sheriff and coroner. The National Transportation Safety Board will commence an investigation once the wreckage can be examined, a process expected to take over a year to determine the cause.
Other parts of the West are also grappling with wildfires. In Washington, Mount Rainier National Park’s Sunrise and White River areas were closed by the National Park Service, as a new fire there had burned less than a third of a square mile (under a square kilometer). Firefighters are actively working to regain control.
Near Spokane, Washington, larger fires have consumed over 15.63 square miles (more than 40 square kilometers). Firefighters have established over 75 miles (roughly 120 kilometers) of containment lines to manage these flames.
In Oregon, the Wrights Spring fire has spread beyond 30 square miles (approximately 77.7 square kilometers) amid hot and dry conditions. Firefighters continue to strategize containment as they mourn the loss of Jason Ensign, who was killed while operating a bulldozer for a timber company. The blaze escalated quickly on Thursday, blocking Ensign’s escape route.
In British Columbia, Canada, more than 20,000 residents were forced to evacuate as another fast-moving wildfire threatened the area.
