Tommy John Reflects on His Legacy and Health Issues

Tommy John, the former New York Yankees pitcher renowned for undergoing the initial elbow surgery that has prolonged numerous players’ careers, shared a heartfelt message with fans during the team’s celebration of Old-Timers’ Day. At 83, John disclosed he is ‘saying goodbye’ as health challenges confront him in Florida.

John expressed gratitude to the Yankees organization and the Steinbrenner family for the chance to bid farewell to fans and friends who supported him during his 26-year career. He credited Dr. Jobe, whose surgical intervention rescued his pitching arm, for enabling his continued success in baseball. This procedure is known for saving the careers of many, including top athletes today.

“Thank you to all the fans who supported me & my teammates for 26 years. I will never forget you,” he stated, reflecting on the support received throughout his career.

In 1974, John underwent the surgery and emerged victorious, securing over 160 victories post-operation. Missing the 1975 season, he became a three-time All-Star following the surgery and ultimately achieved four All-Star selections over his career.

His baseball tenure spanned eight seasons with the Yankees but also included stints with the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels, Cleveland Indians, and Oakland Athletics. John maintained a career ERA of 3.34 with 2,245 strikeouts.

Recalling his father’s words, John noted: “The day I left for my first job as a pitcher, my father looked at me & said, ‘Good luck, Tommy. Just remember one thing: whether you make it big in the big leagues or you don’t, you’ll always just be Tommy John from Terre Haute, Indiana.'” These words have stayed with him, underscoring his humble beginnings.
