Significant Moments in Chicago on Aug. 9

Many pivotal events took place in Chicago’s history. On Aug. 10, 1974, President Richard Nixon resigned following the Watergate investigation. Tribune’s archives show that Gerald Ford was sworn in as the 38th president at 11:05 a.m. CST on Aug. 9, 1974, soon after Nixon’s resignation was official.

The Tribune played a crucial role in Nixon’s demise. In April 1974, the publication flew a team to Washington, D.C., to print the entire Watergate tapes transcript ahead of other American newspapers. The 246,000-word record was part of a special section.

Weather Records

According to the National Weather Service, Chicago’s weather on Aug. 9 has shown extremes. High temperatures reached 97 degrees in 1913, while lows hit 51 degrees in 1972. In 1952, 1.6 inches of rain fell, and there was a trace of snowfall in 1954.

Impactful Cultural Moments

Louis Armstrong, aged 20, arrived in Chicago in 1922, unsure about his decision. He reflected on his initial impressions in his memoir. His idol, Joe “King” Oliver, invited him to play second cornet. This marked the beginning of a significant period in jazz history.

On Aug. 9, 1985, Bruce Springsteen performed at Soldier Field during his “Born in the U.S.A.” tour. Tragically, seven people were killed in a bus accident on their way to the concert.

Notable Sporting Events

Aug. 9, 1988, marked a landmark moment when night ball arrived at Wrigley Field, despite a rainout delaying the event. The Cubs defeated the New York Mets in front of a loud crowd.

In 1993, White Sox player Bo Jackson famously broke a bat over his knee after striking out, while Frank Thomas hit a game-winning home run.

Shopping Developments

Lincoln Mall opened on Aug. 9, 1973. It was the first enclosed mall in the south suburbs of Chicago, preceding Orland Square. The mall faced closure in 2015, with demolition following in 2018.
