The father and agent of soccer legend Lionel Messi, Jorge Messi, has died at the age of 68. The news was confirmed by CONMEBOL, the South American football federation, as well as the Argentina National Football Team and the family in a statement to Reuters.
CONMEBOL expressed their condolences, stating, “We accompany Lionel, his family, friends, and loved ones with respect and affection in this moment of profound grief. May he rest in peace.” Similarly, the Argentina National Football Team offered their support to Messi, saying, “Sending our deepest strength to Leo Messi and his family. We’re with you during this difficult time and sending you our warmest embrace.”
Lionel Messi recently led Argentina to a World Cup second-place finish, following their victorious campaign in 2022. Jorge Messi was a significant presence after their triumph on the global stage, seen celebrating with his son.
Newell’s Old Boys, where Lionel Messi first played in Argentina, honored Jorge as a “pillar of strength”, highlighting his importance alongside his wife, Celia Cuccittini, in supporting Lionel’s career. Their statement emphasized Jorge’s essential role in Lionel’s journey, from early beginnings to achieving world football glory.
Jorge Messi was instrumental in Lionel’s early career, taking him to Barcelona for a trial in 2000 and relocating to Spain with him upon his signing. He remained Lionel’s agent as he transitioned from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain and later to Inter Miami.
Earlier in the year, Lionel Messi was visibly emotional after a hat trick in Argentina’s World Cup opener against Algeria. At a press conference, he attributed his emotional display to a “something unrelated to football,” without elaborating further. Subsequently, the family confirmed Jorge was “going through a health-related situation” and requested privacy regarding the matter.
Jorge Messi’s passing leaves uncertainty about Lionel Messi’s participation in Inter Miami’s upcoming match against Monterrey in the Leagues Cup.
