In a recent game, Sophie Cunningham addressed an incident involving Chicago Sky’s DiJonai Carrington after the Indiana Fever’s 90-86 victory. During the match, Carrington was ejected for hitting Cunningham in the face while blocking her layup attempt.
Cunningham expressed her views bluntly, stating it was an unnecessary action. She emphasized that they hadn’t interacted before and speculated on Carrington’s behavior. “It’s intentional,” Cunningham stated, according to ESPN’s Kareem Copeland.
Following her ejection, Carrington posted “White Privilege” on Threads, tagging the Indiana Fever. Cunningham dismissed the racial angle, noting that similar actions resulted in her own ejection last year. “This has nothing to do with race,” she insisted.
Fever’s coach, Stephanie White, supported the ejection, acknowledging it was a hard foul but doubting Carrington’s intent to harm. “But I don’t think she aimed for the neck,” White added.
Carrington’s current coach, Tyler Marsh, contested the flagrant 2 designation, stating he initially believed Carrington went for the ball. As frustration grows over WNBA officiating, Marsh didn’t comment on Carrington’s later social media post.
The incident occurred amid broader political discussions involving Cunningham. Supporters of her stance on women’s sports rallied outside Fever’s games, sparking both support and counter-protests. Cunningham denies harboring animosity toward transgender individuals but advocates for “common sense” in protecting female sports.
Previously, Carrington had a strained relationship with the Fever. In 2024, she accused Caitlin Clark of flopping and criticized Indiana fans after receiving online abuse. She later accidentally injured Clark during a playoff, leading to controversy, including a joking reference to the incident on Instagram Live.
Outside basketball, Carrington is known for her outspoken views against former President Donald Trump, further fueling public debate about her actions on and off the court.
