Saratoga’s Summer Horse Racing Spectacle

Saratoga, New York is a top summer destination in the United States. Known for its concerts, dining, nightlife, and notably, the Saratoga Race Course, the town attracts racing enthusiasts with a lively atmosphere. Every Saturday, the best horses, jockeys, and trainers gather at the venue, commonly referred to as The Spa.

Among the standout events is Whitney Day, featuring the Grade 1 stakes race. This event is a highlight of Saratoga’s summer racing schedule. Besides the Whitney Stakes, the day’s racing includes three other Grade 1 races: the Test Stakes, Fourstardave Stakes, and Saratoga Derby.

On a recent trip to The Spa, I wagered unsuccessfully on Jim Dandy Day, losing $100. However, I’m returning for Whitney Day with a $125 budget for races 9-12 on Saturday, August 8.

Saratoga Race Course Bets

• Test Stakes, Race 9: $20 Win on #6 On Time Girl.
• Fourstardave Stakes, Race 10: $20 Win on #3 Zulu Kingdom and $5 Exacta: 3/6.
• Saratoga Derby, Race 11: $10 Across the Board on #1 Glavine ($30 total bet).
• Whitney Stakes, Race 12: $50 Win on #6 Sovereignty.

Grade 1 Test Stakes, 4:36 p.m. ET

#6 On Time Girl, with odds of 7-2, features an excellent jockey and trainer combination: Irad Ortiz and Brad Cox. Ortiz boasts multiple wins as the top jockey during the Saratoga summer meet and maintains the highest win percentage among jockeys this season. Similarly, Cox holds the highest win rate among trainers this summer at Saratoga with significant experience.

On Time Girl has secured two wins and one second-place finish in three races at this distance. She’s consistently been the favorite in recent starts, showcasing tactical speed.

Grade 1 Fourstardave Stakes, 5:14 p.m. ET

#3 Zulu Kingdom, at odds of 7-2, has been favored in seven of his 11 career races, achieving eight wins and one third-place finish. At The Spa, he boasts three wins and one third-place in five starts. His jockey, Flavien Prat, and trainer, Chad Brown, lead in earnings for this summer’s Saratoga meet.

Zulu Kingdom recently achieved a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 101 during a Grade 3 Kelso win last month. #6 Capitol Hill, with odds of 10-1, is also included in an exacta bet due to his late speed capabilities.

Grade 1 Saratoga Derby, 5:52 p.m. ET

#1 Glavine, at 12-1 odds, has shown Beyers of 86, 83, and 85 in recent races, not far from the front-runners. Although yet to win at Saratoga, he remains a promising contender with improving potential at significant odds.

Even though the top three betting choices are within shorter odds, Glavine offers a more favorable betting value.

Grade 1 Whitney Stakes, 6:33 p.m. ET

Sovereignty (3-1), known for winning the 2025 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, appears promising despite previous disappointments this year. His record at The Spa includes three wins out of four races. Among significant moments, he claimed last year’s Belmont Stakes in a 10-length win, outperforming top contender Magnitude.

Although Magnitude bested Sovereignty in a May race, Sovereignty remains a strong bet, consistently achieving 104+ Beyer ratings. Sovereignty broke his maiden in his third start as a two-year-old and won the Kentucky Derby in the same race number the following year. At current odds, he’s expected to continue his dominant performance pattern at Saratoga this summer.
