Pro-Israel Students at Odds with Progressive Trends on Campuses and in Politics

Pro-Israel college students express concerns as socialist and anti-Israel activism gain momentum on campuses, affecting their political affiliations. Some young Jewish voters are shifting towards conservative views due to these dynamics.

Addison Stone, a senior at the University of Michigan, noted a prevalent narrative against America even before recent campus events. Speaking at the Israel on Campus Coalition’s summit in Washington, students observed similar political trends emerging within the Democratic Party, especially as its progressive wing gains influence.

Dylan Goldman, a senior at UC Berkeley, describes himself as left-leaning but criticized Democratic lawmakers for supporting socialist candidates who are largely anti-Israel. He believes this alienates Jewish Democrats, pushing them towards conservative stances.

Abdul El-Sayed, aligned with the democratic socialist movement, won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, marking a victory for left-wing candidates challenging the Democratic establishment. This could impact the upcoming midterm elections as the party seeks to maintain congressional control.

The conference in Washington gathered hundreds of pro-Israel students for advocacy training, focusing on backing Israel, fighting antisemitism, and fortifying U.S.-Israel ties on campuses.

Stone remarked on the influence of academia and social media in shaping pro-socialist ideologies among students, resulting in actions like burning American and Israeli flags.

Jewish students still face campus hostilities, which prompted many to attend the summit. Jacob Baime, CEO of the Israel on Campus Coalition, expressed alarm over the treatment of Jewish students in U.S. colleges, noting overt hostility and harassment. He emphasized the resilience and organization of pro-Israel students prepared to defend their beliefs.

Fetterman, who attended the coalition’s event, commented on the Democratic Party’s evolving stance on Israel, which increasingly affects its relationship with the Jewish community. His support for Israel has led to disagreements within his party, especially concerning Israel and broader Middle East issues. Fetterman justifies backing U.S. military actions against Iran, citing them as necessary to prevent nuclear threats and maintain American and Western values.
