Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros Shakes Colorado Politics

Democratic socialist Melat Kiros surprised Colorado’s political scene by defeating incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in the June primary. Her significant victory has highlighted a division in the Democratic Party, causing some members to question its future direction.

Doug Friednash, a seasoned strategist in Colorado, expressed disbelief over Kiros’ 13-point victory margin, indicating an unexpected shift in Denver’s political landscape. Friednash has tracked Colorado’s transformation from a red to a deep blue state. He has previously served in various political roles, including as Denver city attorney and as a chief of staff.

Kiros’ win is among several successes for progressive candidates in primaries across the U.S. This trend alarms veteran Democrats like Friednash. He noted the spread of socialism within the party, comparing its rise to the magnitude of the MAGA movement in the Republican Party.

Kiros’ team engaged voters effectively, focusing on universal healthcare, affordable housing, and utilities. The campaign reached out by knocking on over 100,000 doors and making 500,000 phone calls.

Friednash believes affordability tops young voters’ concerns, as many find homeownership in Denver unattainable. He fears the Democratic Party’s embrace of socialism could impact its competitiveness in swing districts.

Centrist Democratic groups, such as Third Way, are concerned about this ideological shift. They are planning a campaign to counter the Democratic Socialists of America, whom they view as a serious threat to the party’s success.

Jon Caldara, president of the Independence Institute, argues Colorado has shifted away from its pro-business legacy. Caldara, who observes growing issues like affordability and homelessness, believes the state faces difficulties as it transitions politically.

Caldara warns that younger voters, drawn to socialist policies, lack historical perspective on socialism’s global failures. He suggests they don’t realize the long-term implications of redistributing wealth and government interference.

Gene Maine, a Colorado resident and former Soviet Union citizen, sees parallels between socialist policies and the path Denver is taking. Living in Colorado for over 30 years, Maine has witnessed the state’s political evolution and is troubled by the growing appeal of ‘free’ services in campaigns.

While critics view the rise of socialism as a threat, Kiros and similar candidates argue their policies address liberal voters’ dissatisfaction. Her campaign, which focused on economic populism, was endorsed by progressive groups like the Democratic Socialists of America and Justice Democrats.

With Republican Christy Peterson also running, Kiros is favored to win due to the district’s strong Democratic leaning. Her campaign did not respond to comments from Fox News Digital.
