Chiefs Coach Andy Reid on Mahomes and Preseason Plans

Chiefs coach Andy Reid has indicated that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is unlikely to play in their preseason opener against the Rams. There is a possibility he may skip the entire three-game exhibition slate. This decision comes after Mahomes had surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left knee last December.

Mahomes has shown remarkable progress in his rehabilitation, having participated in the entire offseason program before attending training camp. Dallas-based surgeon Dr. Dan Cooper, who performed the procedure, cleared him to participate in practices without restrictions late last month.

Reid mentioned, “There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him. Percentages are leaning that way. I don’t know if I will play him the second or third game, but percentages probably lean against doing that.” Mahomes, a two-time MVP, might not need the extra practice given his experience, yet his competitive nature could lead Reid to consider a few snaps in the second game against Tampa Bay.

Mahomes expressed anticipation for taking his first real hit to fully feel back in football action. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are focused on the development of other quarterbacks. They have acquired veteran Justin Fields from the Jets, who could benefit from game experience in the new offensive scheme. Garrett Nussmeier, their seventh-round draft pick from LSU, also needs opportunities as a developmental project.

Reid stated, “We’ve got new people … behind Mahomes that need some work. The more reps they get, the better.”

While preparing for the upcoming season, the Chiefs are managing several injuries among key players. Offensive guard Trey Smith attended a hip specialist as a precaution, but Reid assured, “he’s going to be OK.” Other injuries include defensive end Ashton Gillotte with a hamstring strain, linebacker Jeffrey Bassa with a groin injury, linebacker Drue Tranquill with back pain, wide receiver Xavier Worthy with a shoulder issue, defensive back L’Jarius Sneed with a knee problem, and cornerback Mansoor Delane with a shoulder injury.

On a positive note, wide receiver Cyrus Allen, the fifth-round pick, returned to practice after bruising his shin. Reid mentioned, “He did a good job when he was back in there, so that’s a positive. He’s focused in. He wants to get out there. We’ll just ease him back in.”
