Senator’s Opposition Narrows Path for Trump’s Attorney General Nominee

Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska, announced her decision to oppose President Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, Todd Blanche. This decision complicates Blanche’s confirmation process. Murkowski stated on Friday that the country requires an Attorney General who will restrain the administration’s impulses. She expressed doubts about Blanche’s ability to fulfill this role.

Murkowski voiced her concerns over the extensive immunity protections granted to the president and called out the politicization, even the weaponization, of the Department of Justice. She cited another factor influencing her decision—the scrapping of the anti-weaponization fund, initially intended to support claims of federal wrongdoing.

Blanche informed Congress in June that the fund was canceled and formally rescinded it this week. Murkowski noted the Department’s $2-billion slush fund, which she believed could have benefited January 6 protesters, is uncertain post-confirmation vote. She stated that the Senate’s leverage on this fund is only temporal.

The nomination faced delays in the Senate Judiciary Committee when GOP Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina questioned the fund’s cessation. Blanche provided formal assurances on August 2.

Murkowski joins Senator Susan Collins of Maine in opposing Blanche. Blanche, currently the acting Attorney General, has been meeting with GOP senators and local leaders in Alaska to address concerns. He previously served as Trump’s personal attorney during various legal challenges.

All Democrats are expected to oppose Blanche’s nomination. With Mitch McConnell absent and Murkowski’s dissent, no further GOP opposition can be afforded. The focus now shifts to Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who has been increasingly critical of the administration following his loss to a Trump-supported opponent.
