Bernie Sanders’ Reluctance to Endorse Francesca Hong Sparks Debate

Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has declined to endorse Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong in the Wisconsin gubernatorial race. Speaking on Pod Save America, Sanders stated, “I don’t think so,” when questioned about supporting Hong’s campaign. Despite meeting Hong a few years back and noting her niceness, Sanders explained his lack of familiarity with the race.

Sanders mentioned that his involvement in gubernatorial races has been limited, with recent exceptions like supporting Democrat Troy Jackson in Maine. Jackson replaced disgraced Senate candidate Graham Platner, whom Sanders previously endorsed.

Political commentators quickly took to social media, interpreting Sanders’ stance as a lack of faith in Hong’s chances. Many highlighted Sanders’ past endorsement of Platner, posing questions about Hong’s viability. According to Washington Free Beacon reporter Chuck Ross, Sanders is focused on Senate races yet has endorsed candidates in other political areas.

“Bernie says he’s not backing Francesca Hong because he’s focused on the Senate,” Ross posted.

Various reactions surfaced online, questioning Hong’s candidacy and political alignment. Conservative commentator Stephen L. Miller implied Sanders avoids Hong due to her radical views. Turning Point Action Northeast Manager Brandon Maly also suggested Hong’s views are too extreme, even for Sanders.

Francesca Hong, while experiencing a rise in poll numbers, faces criticism for her progressive stances such as abolishing the U.S. Senate and defunding the police. Critics argue her approach may not resonate in Wisconsin’s swing-state environment.

Hong attempted to moderate her positions before the Tuesday gubernatorial primary. She competes against David Crowley, Joel Brennan, and Democratic state Sen. Kelda Roys. Polls indicate Hong is likely to win, pitting her against Republican Tom Tiffany in November.

Despite Sanders’ hesitance, Hong’s candidacy remains a topic of discussion about its prospects in the general election.
