New Tool Offers Smoother Skies for Airline Passengers

Airline passengers could soon experience smoother flights, thanks to a new forecasting tool from the National Weather Service’s (NWS) Aviation Weather Center. This tool aims to give pilots more detailed and near real-time information about turbulence. It enables flight crews to identify and adjust to pockets of rough air more efficiently before passengers feel disruptions.

Introducing the Graphical Turbulence Guidance Nowcast

The Graphical Turbulence Guidance Nowcast (GTGN) updates every 15 minutes. It combines aircraft observations with weather and atmospheric data, providing a detailed picture of turbulent conditions. Officials highlight that this system helps pilots discover areas of turbulence that traditional models may not capture.

NWS posted on X emphasizing the importance of this new tool, which began operating on July 30. GTGN offers turbulence information at altitudes from 100 to 50,000 feet. It complements existing forecasts by presenting near real-time updates during flights. Developed with the support of the FAA, it also involved collaboration with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and Colorado State University’s Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA).

Understanding Turbulence

Turbulence involves irregular air movements that cause aircraft to shake or change altitude unexpectedly. Although it may be uncomfortable, modern commercial aircraft can endure much more severe turbulence than what is commonly encountered. The FAA notes that turbulence is a leading cause of in-flight injuries when seat belts are unfastened. Thunderstorms, jet streams, and mountain ranges are common causes of turbulence. These factors can occur alone or together, creating particularly bumpy flights.

Turbulence in North America

Turbulence-tracking platform Turbli analyzed approximately 10,000 routes and found that many of North America’s bumpiest flights occur in the western U.S. Mountain ranges significantly contribute to turbulent air. Routes crossing the Rocky Mountains frequently rank high for turbulence.

Turbli uses the Eddy Dissipation Rate (EDR) to measure turbulence intensity. The scale ranges from Light to Extreme turbulence. While most routes generally experience light turbulence, GTGN’s use could help pilots navigate rougher patches, making flights more comfortable.

America’s Most Turbulent Airports and Routes

For 2025, some of the most turbulent airports include:

  • Denver, Colorado
  • Bozeman, Montana
  • Albuquerque, New Mexico
  • Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Jackson Hole, Wyoming
  • Las Vegas, Nevada
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Reno, Nevada
  • Boise, Idaho

Notable turbulent routes include:

  • Denver (DEN) to Jackson Hole (JAC)
  • Albuquerque (ABQ) to Denver (DEN)
  • Jackson Hole (JAC) to Salt Lake City (SLC)
  • Denver (DEN) to Salt Lake City (SLC)
  • Bozeman (BZN) to Denver (DEN)
  • Las Vegas (LAS) to Reno (RNO)
  • Boise (BOI) to Salt Lake City (SLC)

Although these routes are renowned for turbulence, they normally fall within the ‘light’ category. Enhanced predictions over the last decade, aided by GTGN, are expected to further improve pilot capabilities to manage turbulent air.
