A social media influencer was tragically killed during a live stream in Sinaloa, Mexico, highlighting ongoing violence against online personalities in the nation. César Gastélum, the influencer in question, was shot on Tuesday night in Culiacan, as confirmed by local authorities.
The attack occurred in a parking lot at a Kentucky Fried Chicken, where Gastélum and two others were approached by men on a motorcycle. The incident, captured in a video by The Associated Press, shows one of the assailants shooting Gastélum before fleeing the scene.
“We must find out why this deplorable homicide occurred,” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated during a news conference on Wednesday.
Authorities suspect the killing relates to cartel violence but have not attributed the act to any specific group. Gastélum’s social media presence was significant, with over 650,000 followers on TikTok and more across other platforms. He frequently posted comedy videos intertwined with Mexican regional music.
The incident adds to a growing trend of criminal entities targeting social media figures in Mexico, particularly in areas under cartel influence like Sinaloa and Jalisco. Security analyst David Saucedo suggests that influencers can become targets for various reasons, ranging from affiliations with criminal factions to dissemination of cartel messages.
In Sinaloa, well-known factions like Los Chapitos and Los Mayos have historically engaged in marked violence. Gastélum’s attire during the attack, specifically a white sombrero, may have been significant given past cartel identification practices.
Authorities continue to investigate the killing, while the public and Gastélum’s followers mourn the loss. This incident follows the fatal shooting of another content creator, Valeria Márquez, during a live stream in Jalisco, underscoring the growing risks faced by influencers in Mexico.
