Fetterman Warns of Radical Shift in Democratic Party

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman expressed concerns about rising socialist and communist influences within the Democratic Party. Speaking to Fox News Digital at the Israel on Campus Coalition conference, he highlighted figures like socialist streamer Hasan Piker, saying they are pushing the party towards a more radical future.

Fetterman stated, “I would never elevate… a communist because someone like [Piker] has followers on Twitch, or whatever that is. If you align with someone who praises leaders like Mao and supports regimes like Cuba’s, that’s foreign to democratic ideals. It’s impacting the party.”

Piker, an influential voice on the Democratic left, supports candidates such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. He often praises Mao Zedong and blames the U.S. for Cuba’s hardships.

After his address at the Israel on Campus Coalition’s National Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., Fetterman discussed the party’s direction, which he described as “troubling.” He pointed to the recent primaries as a measure of the party’s progressive leanings.

“I’m not going to be a Republican,” Fetterman clearly stated despite facing criticism.

While Democratic establishment candidates achieved several wins in the primaries, the Senate primary in Michigan between Abdul El-Sayed and Rep. Haley Stevens remained closely contested.

Fetterman voiced concerns about overly radical and anti-Israel stances within the party. He criticized statements labeling Israel as an apartheid state, citing misinformation.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to core values, saying, “You can’t pander to fringe elements.”

Earlier this year, former President Donald Trump cautioned against what he called the Democratic party’s drastic shift beyond socialism. Describing some members as “godless communists,” he warned of significant threats to U.S. stability.

In response to potential socialist wins in primary races, Trump suggested, “They should form another party, the communists of America. It might get about 10% of the vote.”

Fetterman addressed the Israel on Campus Coalition, attended by over 800 pro-Israel students, advocating for U.S.-Israel relations, tackling antisemitism, and defending the Jewish state.

He noted the changing perception of pro-Israel Democrats who now feel pressured to qualify their support, saying that terms like “Zionist” are used pejoratively.

Fetterman also highlighted differences within the party regarding Iran. He supported the Trump administration’s actions against Iran’s nuclear capabilities, a stance that breaks from most Senate Democrats.

“I may have been the only Democrat supporting Trump’s decision to target Iran’s nuclear facilities,” Fetterman said. “It’s about preventing them from acquiring nuclear capabilities.”

He added that for decades, American presidents have struggled with the issue, emphasizing, “The problem is Iran.”
