Dolton Village Implements New Curfew Amid Youth Gatherings

Dolton Village Board members voted to establish a 9 p.m. curfew following several large youth gatherings in the village. Police Chief Jeffrey Chapman explained that the police have attempted to learn more about the teenagers involved by questioning those arrested for past curfew violations or other offenses. Though major incidents were not reported, shots were fired in one gathering and an assault rifle was recovered from a teenager in another.

Chapman noted the challenge of managing crowds, which ranged from 300 to 600 youth. The previous curfew restricted minors from being out from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and from midnight to 6 a.m. on weekends. The new policy requires children under 18 to have adult supervision from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily. Violations incur fines between $250 and $2,500.

Mayor Jason House expressed gratitude to Chapman and his officers for their work in handling the gatherings. He stated the updated curfew and additional penalties equip police with tools to manage these situations. The board unanimously passed the measure.

Chicago area responses to youth gatherings vary. Blue Island City Council now holds parents accountable for damages their children cause during these events. Meanwhile, Chicago officials consider job programs and restrictive measures like snap curfews. Mayor Brandon Johnson is exploring opportunities such as job placements and free YMCA memberships for youth.

Chapman reported that out of eight planned events in Dolton, five occurred this year. Police and the Dolton Park District issued warnings about participating in such events. Hazel Crest police adopted a different strategy, promoting a safer, enjoyable gathering environment during a graduation celebration.

Chapman highlighted that most of the teens involved in Dolton gatherings are not residents. Only two local teens have received citations. Chapman commended his officers’ professionalism in challenging situations.
