Tensions Rise as U.S. and Iran Diverge on Strait of Hormuz Talks

On Aug. 4, 2026, President Donald Trump accused Iran of dishonesty regarding discussions about reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He claimed that talks were underway, refuting Tehran’s denials. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center, operated by the British navy, reported an attack on a cargo vessel near the Strait’s Oman Coast, highlighting the diplomatic confusion.

Traffic through the strait remains minimal, contributing to a 2.7% rise in Brent crude oil prices on Tuesday. Markets show more uncertainty than confidence in the peace process. A visual of an Iranian flag waved near a portrait of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran provided additional context.

President Trump labeled Iran as “unbelievably duplicitous,” stating they sought talks on resolving conflict, only to then deny any negotiations. On Truth Social, Trump wrote, “They ask for a meeting, some would say ‘beg’. Talks begin, with more scheduled in the immediate future, yet they say, openly and proudly, that they’re not having any discussions, mentioning only dealings with ‘Oman.'”

Iran’s Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei countered Trump’s claims. “We currently do not have negotiations with America,” Baghaei stated, affirming that discussions were only with Oman for a temporary safe passage through the strait. Iran has no plans for foreign delegations or sending negotiators abroad soon.

Trump later addressed the media at the White House, asserting ongoing negotiations. “It’s an amazing thing we have a little problem with Iran; we have many talks, and we’re straightforward about it,” he said. He suggested that the Strait might open by tomorrow, with phase one focused on operational safety and further talks addressing Iran’s nuclear program.

He had previously halted major strikes on Iran to create space for negotiations. Meanwhile, attacks continued with reports of a cargo vessel hit by an ‘unknown projectile’ off Oman’s coast on Monday night. Reuters sources confirmed that it was a dry bulk ship with its crew abandoning the vessel and one missing crew member.

In peacetime, approximately 100 ships transit the Strait daily. However, only six vessels passed on Monday, per NBC News analysis of MarineTraffic data. Many, such as the Chinese-owned tanker Starway and the Indian-managed Horizon 1, still use the Iranian route south of Larak Island.

Without an agreed safe route between Iran and Oman, some vessels take risks along the Omani coast with transponders off to conceal positions. The ship hit Monday evening exemplified ongoing threats to those navigating the Strait.
