Coby Bryant’s time with the Chicago Bears has hit a hurdle as he exited the training camp in distress during Monday’s practice. Despite the setback, there is a silver lining for Bryant.
Bryant, emotional after sustaining a knee injury, was taken off the field early into his Bears stint following a successful last season with the Seattle Seahawks, where he won the Super Bowl.
Promising Diagnosis
During a 1-on-1 drill against tight end Cole Kmet, Bryant sustained his injury, immediately grabbing his leg. However, the injury’s diagnosis brought relief. ESPN reports that Bryant will be sidelined for eight-to-10 weeks due to a hyperextended knee, bone bruise, and a small fracture, but it will not end his season.
Significant Contract
Joining the Bears on a three-year, $40 million contract, Bryant was a key acquisition aimed at strengthening an overhauled secondary. His previous performances with the Seahawks, where he recorded seven interceptions, showcased his value.
Recovery Timeline
Bryant might miss the first week of the season, with the kickoff five weeks away, but his return should not be far behind. Teammate Colston Loveland acknowledged Bryant’s predicament, emphasizing his resilience and determination to recover.
Depth Chart Adjustments
As Bryant embarks on rehab, the Bears must adapt their depth chart. Dillon Thieneman, a first-round draft pick from Oregon, was anticipated to start alongside Bryant. With Bryant’s absence, Cam Lewis, another free agent, will likely step into the safety role. Lewis, who joined the Bears following injuries and departures including key players such as Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker, brings experience from his six seasons with the Buffalo Bills.
While the Bears hope for a healthy roster, the current situation proves how essential depth is in the NFL’s challenging season.
