Eating less protein without reducing calorie intake might be a more manageable way for sedentary adults to live longer, healthier lives. This conclusion comes from a recent scientific review.
Earlier research linked calorie restriction with increased lifespan and fewer age-related diseases. However, many find it challenging to stick to low-calorie diets. A review of over 350 studies in the journal Cell Press Blue suggests that lowering protein intake can provide similar metabolic advantages without cutting calories.
According to the review, reducing protein consumption is related to better metabolism, improved nutrient signaling, diminished cellular damage, and enhanced cellular maintenance. While high protein intake benefits active individuals, recent findings indicate that the opposite might apply to those who are less active.
This benefit is partly due to a metabolic hormone called fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21). Limiting protein increases FGF21 levels. In animal studies, FGF21 has been shown to enhance energy usage, decrease inflammation, improve blood sugar control, and extend lifespan.
“There are clear benefits of protein for muscle growth and exercise response in active individuals,” stated Dudley Lamming, author and researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Three essential amino acids—methionine, isoleucine, and valine—are key protein components. In certain conditions, these may influence biological pathways linked to aging. High levels of these amino acids in non-exercisers can keep growth processes constantly active, leading to cellular damage, systemic inflammation, and weight gain over time.
Lamming emphasized, “Because most people are relatively sedentary, many consume more protein than needed, likely harming their health.” The review acknowledges its limitations, noting it is not a new clinical trial but rather observes patterns across existing research. More extensive human studies are required to determine if metabolic benefits translate to longer lifespans.
The study stresses that protein needs vary by individual, and findings should not suggest inadequate consumption levels. For active individuals, protein is essential for muscle building. Pregnant women and older adults also require high protein to combat age-related muscle loss.
The review suggests public health guidelines should tailor protein recommendations according to age and activity. This approach would better fit the largely inactive population.
