The Illusion of Legitimate Leadership

3 hours ago 0

In Myanmar, a familiar pattern of power seizure continues to unfold. The military, under the leadership of Min Aung Hlaing, has taken control. This move is typical; leaders often jail or exile their opponents, a tactic seen in many coups.

Following the military’s grip on power, the next steps involve conducting mock elections. These elections aim to lend credibility to the rule. Military figures often abandon their uniforms in favor of civilian attire, adopting titles that suggest legitimacy. In Myanmar, Min Aung Hlaing now calls himself ‘president.’

This change in appearance and titles does not alter the nature of their control. Despite the facade of civility, the core of their leadership remains authoritarian. The process is a method to feign legitimacy on the world stage.

The shift from military attire to civilian dress and titles is a well-known strategy used to consolidate power while maintaining an authoritarian grip.
