Criticism of FIFA President Intensifies Over Controversial Plans

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated on Sunday that FIFA President Gianni Infantino is unsuitable for leading the organization. This statement comes as a response to the controversy surrounding the now-abandoned plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors.

Burnham emphasized his disapproval by saying, “I do not believe that he is the right man to lead football forward on the world stage.” He further added that the proposed plan was offensive to many within the football community globally, stating, “The plan that was put forward was offensive to many people, football people, around the world, and it can’t be the case that we just move on and forget that, it wasn’t acceptable.”

The European soccer governing body, UEFA, expressed a loss of confidence in FIFA’s leadership, possibly setting the stage for a challenge to Infantino’s presidency. CONCACAF, the governing body for North and Central American and Caribbean soccer, also voiced concerns, claiming that FIFA’s leadership had stopped prioritizing football.

Infantino’s controversial plan involved selling World Cup profits through a commercial entity to manage top competitions. The plan collapsed after UEFA’s 55-member nations agreed to boycott the World Cup and all FIFA competitions. Other confederations, including CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation, opposed the plan.

Despite Infantino’s retraction of his proposal, UEFA stated it would collaborate with various confederations to prevent such a scenario from repeating. UEFA emphasized that “No option should be off the table.” Some associations, including 2022 World Cup host Qatar, publicly supported Infantino, but Burnham’s remarks highlight widespread dissatisfaction.

The upcoming FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March in Rabat, Morocco, with the candidate registration deadline set for November 18, four months prior to the election.
