2 days ago 0

Nirmal Purja, a renowned climber, along with his team, has tragically passed away following an avalanche on Broad Peak. The team, known for making history by scaling Mount K2 in winter, was involved in this unfortunate incident on one of the world’s highest mountains.

Broad Peak, at 26,414 feet, is located in Northern Pakistan. Purja’s company, Elite Expeditions, confirmed his and the other members’ demise in a statement filled with profound sadness. Purja, 43, a celebrated British-Nepali climber, was famous for rapidly breaking climbing records. He climbed all 14 peaks over 8,000 meters in just six months and six days in 2019, a feat featured in a Netflix documentary in 2021. His background includes a decade in the UK’s Special Boat Service, similar to the US Navy SEALs.

International Team Members

The team included climbers from Oman, Nepal, Pakistan, China, and the United States, as noted by the Alpine Club of Pakistan. Among them was Mallory Geis, a 39-year-old from San Antonio, Texas. She had recently closed her Pilates studio to pursue high-altitude climbing. In her posts, she expressed excitement for the expedition to Broad Peak. Her father described her as a positive person who could achieve anything she aspired to.

Rescue Efforts and Aftermath

Despite the challenging terrain and weather, military helicopters and rescue teams searched for the climbers. Nepal’s Prime Minister, Balendra Shah, confirmed the Nepalese climbers’ deaths on social media. Remains of some climbers were taken to hospitals in Pakistan, as reported by the Associated Press.

Elite Expeditions expressed grief, stating, “Today, we mourn not only Nims, but every life lost in this tragedy. Our deepest thoughts and condolences are with their families and loved ones.”
