Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Criticizes Democratic Strategies in Podcast Interview

During a recent podcast interview, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., criticized members of the Democratic Party for their approach in supporting former President Joe Biden. Speaking with Emma Vigeland, host of “The Majority Report,” Ocasio-Cortez reflected on the perceived credibility issues within the party.

Vigeland questioned how Democrats lost ground on the topic of democracy. She pointed out that decisions like Biden’s uncontested run in the 2024 re-election and sidelining voter concerns with “the genocide in Gaza” contributed to this perception.

“When Kamala Harris was speaking about democracy with banners behind her, they lacked the necessary credibility to combat the fascist threat,” Vigeland stated.

Ocasio-Cortez discussed the internal dynamics among Democrats who sought a new presidential candidate. She noted that these same individuals were deeply involved in closing ranks around Biden, even before the primary process began. The lawmaker observed that their actions were meant to compensate for earlier support but later became a litmus test within the party.

“I feel like many are compensating because there’s a consultant class that backed Biden when stepping down was considered a litmus test,” she said. “These individuals were part of the establishment supporting Biden before any primary process could start.”

Ocasio-Cortez remained supportive of Biden until he withdrew in July 2024. She voiced her concerns about the lack of alternatives that would prevent future peril, despite Democratic calls for him to step aside after a challenging debate against Donald Trump.

“If you are convinced that the candidate or president cannot defeat Donald Trump, then act according to your conscience. However, I have not seen an alternative scenario that doesn’t set us up for significant danger,” she noted at the time.

Therapist Jonathan Alter expressed concerns about erosion of trust among Democratic voters. “People forgive mistakes,” he remarked. “There’s less forgiveness when different rules apply to opponents and those in power.” Alter warned that trust diminishes rapidly when perceived hypocrisy becomes apparent.

Ocasio-Cortez highlighted several Democrats rallying around Biden instead of proposing a primary challenger. “By the end, they saw how unpopular their actions were,” she added.

Following a tough debate in June 2024, Biden faced calls to withdraw from the race. Dean Phillips, a former Democratic lawmaker, attempted to challenge Biden but struggled to gain traction. Phillips claimed Democratic leadership resisted his campaign. He recounted his interaction with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ chief of staff, who indicated Phillips wouldn’t communicate directly with Biden or the White House following his decision to run.
