Street Takeover on Interstate 75 Leads to High-Speed Chase and Arrests

Early Saturday morning, a significant disruption occurred on Interstate 75 in Hillsborough County, Florida. Hundreds of vehicles blocked the northbound lanes during a street takeover, triggering a high-speed chase that peaked at 140 mph.

The incident began around 1:30 a.m. near mile marker 266 in Thonotosassa. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) cameras captured numerous vehicles stopping traffic while drivers performed burnouts on the highway. As documented in the arrest report, the presence of these vehicles created a chaotic scene.

When troopers arrived, video footage showed drivers and spectators quickly returning to their vehicles, leading to a dispersal. Most participants left the area without facing legal charges.

Among those involved, a green BMW allegedly fled the scene. This prompted a trooper to initiate a pursuit. Authorities identified the driver as 25-year-old Yulian Lugo. He sped away at approximately 140 mph, more than double the posted speed limit. He exited the interstate and eventually stopped in a parking lot.

Lugo was subsequently arrested for aggravated fleeing to elude and participating in a street takeover. Both are felony charges. Four individuals, including Lugo, were taken into custody. Three passengers, aged 24 and two 18-year-olds, were charged with misdemeanor highway racing. All were booked into the Hillsborough County Jail.

Street takeovers involve participants using public roads for stunts like burnouts, posing safety risks to drivers, participants, and spectators. These events have gained law enforcement’s attention both in Florida and nationally.
