Francesca Hong, considered the likely Democratic nominee for Wisconsin governor and supported by the Democratic Socialists of America, has made statements about Thanksgiving that raise eyebrows. In a past post, she suggested canceling Thanksgiving, arguing it celebrates colonialism. She linked the holiday to the spread of smallpox that affected many indigenous people.

Her campaign has highlighted her progressive views as she leads the gubernatorial race. Hong embraces policies aimed at helping working-class citizens, aligning with other progressives like New York’s Zohran Mamdani. Her platforms include race-based grants, publicly funded grocery stores, and a state-run bank. These positions have boosted her popularity leading up to the primary.

Hong has faced criticism online for a resurfaced comment from 2019 regarding a personal incident at a Culver’s restaurant, where she felt anxious and commented on the predominantly white patrons. This led to derision from political commentators.

Meanwhile, the race took a turn when former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes withdrew, leaving Hong and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley as main contenders. Barnes’ exit followed allegations of past misconduct under investigation.

Hong has gathered support from notable progressives like Representatives Ilhan Omar and Ro Khanna and has raised approximately $709,000. Her competitor Crowley, endorsed by Governor Evers for his experience, has raised $250,000. The primary is scheduled for August 11.
