Baker Mayfield Focused Despite Contract Dispute with Buccaneers

Baker Mayfield, feeling “disrespected” by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, remains focused on delivering strong performances on the field. The quarterback, who has been a Pro Bowl selection twice, did not receive the contract extension he sought. He plans to play out the final season of his three-year, $100 million contract.

“I’ve been upfront about my feelings regarding Tampa,” Mayfield shared on Thursday. “It’s home for our family. We love it here. I wanted a deal done and set the deadline, then committed to focusing solely on football. I meant that. Maybe they thought I’d entertain their offers.”

Mayfield, the first pick in the 2018 NFL draft by Cleveland, revitalized his career in Tampa Bay after stepping in for Tom Brady in 2023. He reached the Pro Bowl in his first two seasons and led the team to NFC South titles. Last season, he was an MVP candidate while the team started 6-2, though injuries affected his performance later.

“Feeling disrespected is disappointing,” Mayfield stated, “especially after earning it. I evaluate myself against other quarterbacks and feel that I deserve to be compensated in certain categories.”

Designation as a franchise quarterback came from ownership, but a new contract remains elusive. Mayfield had set a contract deadline before the start of training camp but reassured teammates it wouldn’t be a distraction. “Money shouldn’t motivate in football,” he said. “It’s about how I help this team win. Having a chip on my shoulder just means betting on myself.”

If Mayfield replicates his 2024 performance with 4,500 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, and a 71.4% completion rate, the Buccaneers may need to offer a more lucrative deal, potentially ranging from $50-55 million.

Offensive lineman Ben Bredeson praised Mayfield, saying, “Baker hasn’t changed despite everything happening. He’s our quarterback, leader, and friend. He’s incredibly consistent and focused. It’s an honor to work with him daily.”

Defensive tackle Vita Vea, also facing contract concerns in the final year of his deal, missed practice due to a back injury. “Winning is the priority,” Mayfield said. “Vita is crucial to our defense. I hope they resolve his situation.”
