An F-35 jet from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing crashed on Friday morning at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar in San Diego. The crash led to an emergency response and started a brush fire, according to a base spokesperson.
Emergency teams responded to what the Marine Corps called an “aircraft mishap” around 10 a.m. local time. The aircraft was part of Marine Aircraft Group 11, as stated by 1st Lt. Blake Starbuck. The incident took place in the vicinity of MCAS Miramar and involved a Marine Corps F-35B. Fortunately, the pilot ejected safely and was rescued.
Details regarding the purpose of the flight, whether it was departing or arriving, or if it was a training mission remain unclear. Information about any injuries or fatalities is also not available at this time.
The crash triggered a fire in a field just north of State Route 52, visible from the freeway. Video footage showed the aircraft broken into two segments amid a large burnt area equivalent to a football field. The fire in the field prompted calls to the California Highway Patrol as it was visible from the freeway.
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department confirmed its involvement in tackling the brush fire, acknowledging that the military has jurisdiction over the incident.
