Kyle Whittingham’s New Challenge at Michigan

3 days ago 0

Kyle Whittingham is set to face a significant challenge this November. Despite his previous experience at two Rose Bowls, the stakes have never been higher. After 22 seasons with Utah, he has moved to Ann Arbor to lead the Michigan Wolverines following Sherrone Moore’s departure.

Taking over Michigan marks a new chapter for Whittingham. The intensity of Michigan’s rivalries is a different level compared to those at Utah. A standout rivalry is with Ohio State, which many consider one of the biggest in sports.

Adapting to Michigan’s Environment

At the Big Ten Media Day, Whittingham addressed this legendary rivalry. “I haven’t learned much more than I already knew. It’s a national game. Everybody knows about it. It’s ‘The Game’ as we call it. It’s of great importance to both sides obviously. But I’m an old-school coach. We got 11 games that we play before that, so we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves,” he said.

He emphasized understanding the rivalry’s implications, recognizing its intensity and national allure. “Our players are the same. Everybody knows that game’s looming out there. I think the best-case scenario, it comes down to that 12th game. That’s for all the marbles in the Big Ten. I think that would be ideal. Hopefully that happens,” he added.

When questioned about developing a dislike for Ohio State, Whittingham responded cautiously. “Hate’s a strong word,” he admitted. He did express a strong desire to triumph in the matchup, stating that winning the game during the Big Ten championship would be ideal.

A Dramatic Rivalry

The rivalry saw a dramatic moment in 2024. The Wolverines, underdogs at the time, defeated the highly-ranked Buckeyes in Columbus. Chaos erupted afterward, leading to a brawl and police intervention. Despite the upset, Ohio State claimed the national title that season.

The tension was evident when Ohio State broke a losing streak last November at The Big House. Michigan players took precautions to protect their logo amid past incidents.
