Tennessee Volunteers Face Challenges with Star Linebacker Suspension

The Tennessee Volunteers have faced a challenging offseason, marked by the dismissal of transfer player Chaz Coleman from Penn State. This situation became more difficult when star linebacker Arion Carter was suspended for multiple games by the NCAA.

According to Adam Sparks of the Knoxville News, Carter was suspended for two games due to a violation involving his agent paying $427 for a flight to an NFL pre-draft training facility. Though Carter reimbursed the cost, the NCAA considered it an impermissible benefit.

“NCAA rules are clear: student-athletes may not sign with agents to pursue NFL draft opportunities, and this student-athlete knowingly violated those longstanding rules,” the NCAA stated.

Carter initially declared for the 2026 NFL draft but withdrew after sustaining an injury that required surgery. Despite paying back the flight expense, the NCAA ruled against him, leading to the suspension.

The Volunteers will play Furman on September 5 and Georgia Tech on September 12 without one of their top defensive players. Carter, 21, had an impactful season last year, earning second-team All-SEC honors for his impressive performance.

Despite the setback, head coach Josh Huepel expressed disagreement with the NCAA’s decision and voiced support for Carter. Huepel noted Carter’s contributions and his academic achievements, emphasizing the team’s support.

“We disagree with the NCAA’s ruling on punishing Arion with a multi-game suspension this fall,” said Huepel. “Arion made the right decision for his future health and well-being. He will proudly graduate from Tennessee in public health with Dean’s List honors in August. Our team stands behind AC and his family, and we can’t wait to be on the field with him during training camp next week.”
