Bryan Kohberger, charged with the murder of four University of Idaho students, is trying to retract his previous guilty plea. His recent appeal claims inadequate legal counsel, coercion, false promises, and misinformation, seeking a new trial. Victims’ families, like Kaylee Goncalves’ mother, have expressed disappointment, though they expected this legal action.
A forensic expert previously retained by Kohberger’s defense is questioning hair evidence found at the crime scene. An attorney for one victim’s family states this evidence does not clear Kohberger.
Kohberger admitted guilt in July 2025 to killing Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves in Moscow, Idaho, in November 2022. He received multiple life sentences and additional years for burglary.
The petition claims his plea was coerced and that evidence which might prove innocence was not communicated. Hair evidence is cited in the investigation, discovered under Ethan Chapin’s hand on Xana Kernodle’s bed, attached by dried blood. The hair, estimated at over two dozen strands, is a mix of light and dark brown, likely between three and four inches long.
“Ineffective legal representation and coercion in pleading must be addressed,” said forensic expert Brent Turvey.
Turvey reviewed evidence in Moscow, Idaho. He noted the FBI lab excluded Kohberger’s hair from the findings. Kohberger’s appeal refers to these hairs and includes an interview in The New York Times, where he questions their origin.
The query on the hair comes after DNA testing, linking at least one hair sample to Ethan Chapin. It remains unconfirmed if this was the same hair Turvey mentioned. His statements have sparked a public dispute with Kohberger’s former legal team.
Attorney Shanon Gray, representing Kaylee Goncalves’ family, downplayed the evidence’s significance. “The defense knew about it,” he said. “It doesn’t prove Bryan Kohberger wasn’t there.”
The FBI and Kohberger have declined to comment. His defense has received heavy scrutiny, and the court is urged to investigate his claims seriously.
