Cyclosporiasis Outbreak and Youth Academy Illness

7 days ago 0

The CDC has reported over 4,000 cases of cyclosporiasis across 41 states. Dr. Marc Siegel provides an analysis regarding the outbreak and discusses an FDA panel’s recommendation to ease peptide restrictions.

Recently, 19 cadets from the Capital Guardian Youth Challenge Academy in Laurel, Maryland, were hospitalized with symptoms from an unknown illness. This prompted a mass casualty response. The academy, based in the Washington, D.C. area, is a military-style program for at-risk teens and is operated by the DC National Guard.

Emergency crews arrived at the academy following reports of cadets displaying symptoms after lunch, such as dizziness, headaches, and nausea. A concerned mother mentioned that her son’s blood tests showed elevated carbon monoxide levels. However, Anne Arundel County Fire Department found no elevated carbon monoxide levels during their investigation.

Officials have not determined the cause of the illness but speculate a potential link to food. The DC National Guard emphasizes the importance of health and safety for their cadets and staff and is collaborating with emergency medical personnel and public health officials during the ongoing investigation.

While 19 cadets required hospital treatment, one adult was evaluated at the scene but chose not to pursue further medical care. For further updates, the DC National Guard is closely monitoring the situation.
