President Donald Trump expressed satisfaction on Monday following a legal decision that allows his team to revise a significant $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times. Trump shared his thoughts on Truth Social, stating, “BREAKING NEWS: The Failing New York Times, after years of harassment and slander, has once again failed in their attempt to dismiss our lawsuit. As we requested, the judge has ordered an updated complaint detailing how The Times acted with malice in defaming me, my family, our MAGA Movement, and America.”
Trump insisted on holding The Times and what he described as the “Mainstream Media” accountable for disseminating false news. He further expressed gratitude for the attention to the matter. His statement followed a judge’s ruling in favor of allowing the amendment of the lawsuit, prompting Trump to assert a victory in this ongoing legal battle.
Filed in the U.S. District Court for Florida’s Middle District in Tampa, the legal team’s deadline to amend the lawsuit is set for August 27. As of now, The New York Times has not responded to a request for comment. The suit claims the Times has engaged in defamatory and libelous actions spanning various coverage, including reports on “The Apprentice” and alleged questionable tax dealings.
The New York Times has previously dismissed the lawsuit, asserting it lacks merit. The defendants in the case include The New York Times Company, journalists Susanne Craig, Russ Buettner, Peter Baker, and Michael S. Schmidt, along with Penguin Random House. Published work by Craig and Buettner, titled “Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success,” is under scrutiny in the lawsuit.
A spokesperson for The Times reiterated their stance, declaring the lawsuit as baseless and an effort to suppress independent journalism while seeking publicity. They emphasized that The New York Times remains undeterred by what they term as intimidation tactics.
