House Watchdog Reviews Allegations Against Texas Republican

The House of Representatives’ internal watchdog is currently examining accusations against a Texas House Republican, Rep. Lance Gooden. He defended himself on Monday, describing the claims as unsubstantiated.

The House Committee on Ethics has announced an investigation into Gooden. The specific reasons for this inquiry are not entirely clear yet, but Gooden mentioned it relates to financial matters. He denied any wrongdoing in a statement to Fox News Digital.

These are bogus spending allegations perpetrated by dishonest unelected OCC bureaucrats, and as the fifth Texas GOP ally of the president to endure one of these attacks, I am confident the House Ethics Committee will confirm their baseless nature.

The committee stated it is extending its review of a matter reported to the Office of Congressional Conduct (OCC) on June 10. This is a preliminary step before deciding whether they will proceed with a full investigation. The committee plans to announce its decision on or before November 9.

The OCC functions as an independent, nonpartisan organization. It investigates various allegations made against House lawmakers, staff, and officers. These include issues related to earmarks, travel, financial disclosures, and legal expense funds. After examining these claims, the OCC decides whether to refer them to the House Ethics Committee.

The recent announcement hints at a preliminary investigation by the Ethics panel. Lawmakers must now decide if this will escalate into a formal investigation involving an investigatory subcommittee.
