The proposal faced opposition from Oregon’s political figures, including Governor Tina Kotek, U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, and both Democrat and Republican lawmakers. Organizations such as the Oregon Farm Bureau and Oregon Hunters Association also condemned the initiative.

Kotek expressed relief that IP28 didn’t qualify, noting it wouldn’t benefit Oregonians. The measure, according to critics, could have disrupted the wildlife-management systems that aid in maintaining animal populations and habitats.

Hunters and anglers significantly contribute to conservation funding through licenses and taxes on sporting goods. These funds support various state programs, from habitat acquisition to public recreation, benefiting not only hunters but the general public.
