American cyclist Sepp Kuss faced a gut-wrenching moment which was quickly thwarted by a strategically positioned catch fence. While leading and approaching the stage’s final stretch, Kuss took a corner too wide, crashing into a low concrete barrier. Fortuitously, the barrier was coupled with a catch fence, preventing a potentially disastrous fall.
The cliff’s wall could have spelled the end for any cyclist in that situation, showcasing the inherent risks of professional cycling. The catch fence’s positioning might have been due to practical foresight or sheer luck, yet one can’t help but appreciate its presence.
Kuss often embodies the fearless spirit required for cycling. Falling over the French Alps would have been catastrophic, albeit the day still presented its challenges. During this stage alone, Kuss endured two crashes, the latter costing him his lead position. Despite these setbacks, he secured third place.
Had he clinched the stage victory, it would have marked the first American triumph since Kuss himself achieved victory in 2021, according to Yahoo Sports.
