Sophie Cunningham Stands Firm on Women’s Sports

Riley Gaines commended WNBA star Sophie Cunningham for her stance on keeping biological men out of women’s sports. Cunningham’s decision to speak out is notable given her participation in what Gaines describes as the ‘most woke league of all time.’

Gaines, a former NCAA swimmer and host of ‘The Riley Gaines Show,’ praised Cunningham for her courage. She emphasized that Cunningham is the ‘first current high-level female athlete’ to take this stance in a professional league.

‘Saying men aren’t women and shouldn’t compete in women’s sports seems simple, but in Cunningham’s position, it’s incredibly challenging,’ Gaines noted. ‘It requires immense courage, especially in the WNBA.’

“Sophie Cunningham said something immensely courageous, making her a pioneering voice among professional female athletes,” Gaines expressed.

Recently, Cunningham addressed her views on transgender athletes participating in women’s sports. Speaking to ESPN, she clarified misconceptions about her stance: ‘I received negative feedback about hating trans people, but I never said that.’

‘I aim to extend love, and love includes honesty,’ Cunningham explained. ‘I want to protect young girls in locker rooms and sports from having to compete against biological men.’

Since her comments, Cunningham has garnered support from Republican lawmakers and women’s sports advocates, such as Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Eric Schmitt, R-Mo.

Gaines believes Cunningham isn’t seeking fame from her statements and acknowledges the risk of losing career opportunities in the WNBA.

‘It’s not about seeking attention or praise,’ Gaines remarked. ‘It’s about standing up for what is moral and just.’

Jennifer Sey, CEO of XX-XY Athletics, expressed interest in signing Cunningham, labeling her as the ‘perfect person’ for the brand.

‘Cunningham is not only a fantastic athlete; her personality is incredible,’ Sey said. ‘She embodies what we stand for—being outspoken and tough.’

Sey initially connected with Cunningham after XX-XY Athletics released an ad in October 2024, challenging Nike on the inclusion of biological males in women’s sports. Cunningham supported the ad, reaching out privately to Sey with praise.
