The incident was posted by the Instagram user lucky_charmedcourt, who shared a series of six videos detailing the situation. The videos show a woman with a skin condition scratching her foot using the fork’s tines.
The Instagram user took actions to alert guest services and the captain about this unusual event, captioning part two of her documentation as ‘foot fungus lady uses fork on cruise.’ The woman is seen scratching her foot more fiercely with the fork, while additional footage depicts her tending to her foot’s dry skin on a deck.
According to the cruise blog ‘CruiseHive,’ the ship involved is the Carnival Sunrise, previously known as Carnival Triumph. Fox News Digital has reached out to Carnival Cruise Line, as well as the Instagram poster, for comments.
On July 22, Carnival Cruise Line addressed the situation via a statement on social media, stating, ‘We can confirm that forks are intended for food, not foot care. Once we became aware of the situation, our team quickly addressed it with the guest and removed the utensil from service.’
Carnival Cruise Line emphasized its commitment to cleanliness, stating, ‘Cleanliness and hygiene are no joke to us. Our crew works hard every day to maintain high standards across our fleet and to ensure all guests enjoy a safe, clean, and comfortable vacation.’
The viral videos have sparked discussions online, particularly about hygiene standards on cruise ships. Some cruise enthusiasts have taken to Reddit to express their dismay and disbelief, while others commented directly on Instagram.
Despite the heightened scrutiny on cruise ship sanitization protocols, the popularity of cruising seems unaffected. The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) predicts more than 38 million people will embark on ocean cruises this year, marking an increase from last year’s record of 37.2 million passengers.
