A West Virginia state delegate is under pressure to step down after being arrested for allegedly engaging in sexual acts with a 15-year-old student. Republican David Elliott Pritt, a 36-year-old father of four, is charged with enticement of a minor. This follows accusations of sexual abuse reported by the family of a 15-year-old girl at Oak Hill High School, where Pritt was an English teacher, according to a federal complaint.
The complaint alleges Pritt initiated contact with the girl in 2024, using platforms like Roblox and Snapchat. By the end of that school year, he purportedly expressed his love to her. He also allegedly sent explicit content via these platforms in 2025 and requested the same from her. A physical relationship is said to have started late last year, with meetings in his classroom.
Although the last known encounter was months ago, Pritt reportedly continued communication until recently. He allegedly advised the girl to remain silent about their interactions, fearing significant public backlash.
West Virginia House of Delegates Speaker Roger Hanshaw removed Pritt from all legislative roles. Hanshaw strongly condemned the allegations and urged Pritt to resign, emphasizing the higher standards expected of public officials. He stated, “No child should ever be exploited by anyone, especially by adults in positions of trust.”
Delegate Josh Holstein also called for Pritt’s immediate resignation, citing the seriousness of the charges and the need for representation without reproach.
Fayette County Schools confirmed Pritt’s arrest, affirming their cooperation with the investigation. “The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority,” school officials remarked.
Superintendent Michele Blatt announced the suspension of Pritt’s teaching certificate, noting the accusations’ severe implications for public trust.
Pritt, elected to the West Virginia House in 2022 and an Air Force veteran, remains in custody and is scheduled for a federal court appearance. Discussions about the need for a special legislative session to assess Pritt’s status are underway, reinforcing the independent duty of maintaining the integrity of public office.
