Vice President JD Vance Welcomes Newborn Son Alec Neel Vance

Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, have introduced their newborn son, Alec Neel Vance. Although the name Alec once had widespread popularity, it is now less common. The couple made the announcement of their fourth child’s birth on platforms like Instagram and X, with JD Vance expressing excitement over Alec’s arrival. He stated, “We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother.”

The Vances expressed gratitude to the military doctors and staff at Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit. Additionally, the White House’s official X account reshared their announcement, adding their congratulations to the family. Alec’s birth marks a rare occasion in U.S. political history, as it is the first time in over 150 years that a sitting vice president has welcomed a child. The last was Schuyler Colfax in 1870.

Alec joins his siblings Ewan, age 9, Vivek, age 6, and Mirabel, age 4. At age 40, Usha Vance belongs to a growing demographic of older mothers in the U.S., where births among women aged 40 and older have increased, contrasting the general decline in birth rates.

The choice of the name Alec reflects broader trends in baby naming. Once a favored option, the name Alec has seen a decline in popularity. According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), Alec peaked at 109th place in 1994 when 3,322 American babies were named Alec. By 2025, it had slid to 977th place, with only 234 babies receiving that name. In contrast, the most popular names in 2025, as reported by the SSA, include Liam, Noah, and Oliver for boys, and Olivia, Charlotte, and Emma for girls.

A shift in naming preferences is evident, with many parents aiming for less common names. A 2025 Nameberry survey indicated that over 75% of parents avoid top 10 names. The Vances’ older children—Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel—also have names that do not appear in the current top 1,000 SSA rankings, favoring a unique approach over mainstream choices like Liam or Olivia. Alec’s inclusion in the family follows this distinctive naming pattern, continuing the Vances’ preference for less common names.
