North Aurora’s Dog Days of Summer Brings New Life to Riverfront Park

North Aurora’s Riverfront Park transformed on Saturday morning, welcoming numerous four-legged guests who stole the spotlight. The village hosted its second Dog Days of Summer event starting at 10 a.m., featuring a pet parade and a market offering pet-related products.

Katrina Keilty of North Aurora was delighted to see the Fox River park from a fresh perspective with her dog Duncan, a Wooly Siberian Husky. ‘He is a Wooly Siberian Husky and I thought of naming him Dunkin like the doughnut because he kind of looks like one,’ she remarked before the pet parade kicked off. ‘We’re participating in the ‘most unique’ category because many don’t realize he is a husky due to his longer fur and heterochromatic eyes. The pet parade concept is fantastic.’

Natalie Stevens, the community relations coordinator for North Aurora, explained that the pet parade was once part of the North Aurora Days festival years ago but hadn’t been held in recent times. ‘We all love our pets, so we decided to organize this ourselves,’ she stated. The parade included categories such as cutest pet, owner-pet look-alike, biggest and smallest pet, most unusual pet, and best trick. Participants competed for first and second prizes, which included trophies and gift certificates to pet stores.

The event also featured vendors offering handmade dog treats, apparel, and custom pet portraits. ‘We have fantastic local pet businesses participating, including dog day cares, pet stores, and on-site dog rescue organizations with adoptable dogs,’ Stevens noted. Despite some smoke from Canadian wildfires potentially reducing turnout, attendees were enthusiastic about showcasing their pets.

Lore Solano from North Aurora presented Dolce, a mini-long-haired dachshund with a cream color she described as ‘almost white.’ Dolce was part of the costume contest; last year, she competed in and won a weiner race. ‘I’m dressing her up as a princess. I have a deep love for dogs, and I used to breed and show them,’ Solano shared.

Anna Califf from Westchester displayed her dog Lady Lucy in the ‘Best Costume’ category at the pet parade, held on July 18, 2026, during North Aurora’s Dog Days of Summer festival. Anna faced a tough decision on whether to enter her Chihuahua in either ‘Best Costume’ or ‘Look-Alike’ due to her past contest wins.

Although the parade featured only canine contestants, all pets were welcomed at the event. Laura McCoy of North Aurora contemplated bringing her rescue dog Caramel and possibly other pets. ‘We have a frog and a toad at home,’ she mentioned. ‘We considered it but decided they might not enjoy the event.’
